A health centre in Rhondda Cynon Taff will receive a £1.7m redevelopment, courtesy of the Welsh Government.

Two GP services within the same Tonypandy Healthcare premises will merge to create an integrated centre.

The government investment will increase the number of clinical rooms and create secure accommodation and private space for clinical staff and patients.

The health secretary said: "Having two separate GP surgeries within the health centre no longer made sense. For one thing, a large amount of space within the building was being duplicated, which meant facilities were cramped for staff and patients, while recruitment of staff for both surgeries was also a challenge.

"Our long-term plan for health and social care in Wales focuses on providing better care, closer to home. The refurbishment to Tonypandy Health Centre will do just that. I’m pleased we’ve committed £1.7m funding for the Centre, which will help improve access to local services for patients."

The funding will also be used to improve the infrastructure of the building, with upgrades to water, drainage, electrics, plumbing and heating creating a modern building which will serve the community for years to come.

Creating secure spaces within a GP surgery is vital not only for patients, due to privacy requirements, but for the safety and wellbeing of the doctors and other members of staff.

Particularly if the surgery is situated in a high-risk area, health centres might want control over doors which separate the reception lobby from the GP offices, or control over access to staff-specific areas such as places where drugs are kept.

From the control of a single internal door through to a fully computerised, multi-site network of control points, an access control system from Access Control Wales is the solution.

Using our high-quality WinAC.NET software, you can control most standard types of internal/external electronic door releases and physical security devices such as barriers and turnstiles. We can provide these items ourselves if you do not have them or the system can link into your existing security devices.

Operated by contactless radio frequency smart cards, key fobs or biometrics, the system gives you full control over who is allowed access through any controlled point at any time of any day, placing it at the forefront of security solutions. Access is flexible and granular, so you can control down it to each individual minute of each individual staff member if you need to.
